Case Trends
To date, the Tulsa Health Department (THD) has confirmed 2,742 positive COVID-19 cases in Tulsa County. 1,619 residents have recovered and 66 have died. The THD dashboard is updated daily at www.tulsa-health.org/COVID19.
With the uptick in positive cases, THD has noticed these trends:
- For the week of June 14 to June 20, new cases were increased by 92%
- The 18 – 35 age group, representing over 40% of all new cases, had a nearly 90% increase in new cases last week
- The age group of 36 – 49 is the second largest group to have new cases, with 28% of new cases.
- Hospitalizations for the age group of 18 – 35 saw a 133% increase over the previous week, and that group represents 25% of all hospitalizations
In the early stages of this pandemic, Tulsa County residents took public health advice very seriously, and locally we flattened the curve to avoid a surge to our hospital systems.
After months of this same messaging, the data is showing health experts that individuals are starting to become lax with public health recommendations.
The Tulsa Health Department has now seen two week cycles where our actual reported cases are bigger than our modeled numbers. Leaders knew we’d see an increase in cases as our local economy reopened, but this has been higher than projected, and it is concerning if we continue this upward trend of new cases.
People between the ages of 18 and 50 account for nearly 70% of all of the new cases. These individuals are more likely than ever before to be carrying this virus throughout our community as they are the most mobile demographics. If you are in this demographic, you may think that you are invincible. Right now, more than half of all hospitalizations are for people under age 50. While the risk of severe complications is lower for younger people, they can spread it to those more vulnerable like their parents or immunocompromised friend.
While hospitalization numbers are at an all-time highs for COVID-19, we are not close to overwhelming our health care system, and local leaders want to keep it that way.
Public health experts express the next six weeks are going to the most critical as Tulsa County residents try to lessen the spread in effort to flatten the curve once again. Stay the course and remain vigilant as this virus is not going anywhere soon.
